84 CORPORATE VISION / Corporate Excellence Awards 2018 66 Issue 6 2018 , Domus Semo Sancus (DSS) Ltd, is afinancial technology company that is building tools to encourage financial inclusion and bridge the e-commerce divide. We profile the firm, whichwas recentlynamed Most Innovative FintechPlatform2018 in our Corporate Excellence Awards 2018, tofind outmore and explore the secrets behind its success. Domus Semo Sancus: FinTech With A Conscious Established in 2014, DSS is undertaking vital work to support service users around the world. Two Billion adults are unbanked, many of whom are migrants who rely on remittance services to send money back to their homes to support their loved ones. Despite the best efforts of the World Bank to reduce the average remittance cost to 5% by 2014, it still stands at greater than 7%. “Remittances play an important role in reducing the incidence and severity of poverty”, and a drop to 5% would save remitters approximately US$16 billion per year, which could go a long way to helping their families and friends. A lack of financial inclusion is a major problem, particularly since the world is fast becoming cashless. If left unchecked, there is going to be a major e-commerce divide, with a significant portion of the world’s population being unable to conduct certain financial transactions. This issue has been weighing on the mind of DSS’s Founder, E. Jay Saunders for a few years. To address the issues that face those without access to banking facilities, DSS was established in the Turks & Caicos Islands (one of the smallest countries on the planet), with the goal to give persons who need it most the tools to achieve financial inclusion. At DSS, the team works to support financial inclusion and is building tools to make lives better, and as such the firm’s Wowlet™ platform is designed first and foremost to address that need at a global level. However, for the firm to help the global unbanked achieve financial inclusion, DSS have to ensure that persons aren’t able to use our tools for nefarious reasons. That’s because every time someone exploits the global financial system, it makes it harder for everyone else – especially those most in need. As such, DSS has set out to build a best-in-class tool to ensure that the team always know who their customers are, and to be alerted to those that may represent a high risk to us, our partners, and to others; and that tool is SafetyNet™. 1804CV23 Knowing Your Customer is not a unique requirement to DSS, and so to help other businesses that need to know who they’re associating with, the firm has made SafetyNet™ available as a cloud based utility that can be accessed at anytime from anywhere in the world. Today, DSS has offices in the Turks & Caicos Islands and the USA, with staff across 5 countries. The firm has grown significantly since 2014, but its goal of “Making Lives Better” remains unchanged, and will remain the team’s ongoing focus as it looks towards a bright future.
