Canadian Business Awards 2026 | 19 “The NWT Disabilities Council exists to educate, advocate, and support the self-determination of all individuals with disabilities.” Living with a disability involves an evolving experience in which a person’s physical or cognitive impairments interact with their surrounding social and physical environments, leading to potential reduced or limited participation in everyday life. However, with care, compassion, and a passion for equity driving NWT Disabilities Council, individuals are not only encouraged to have better lives, but better lives are delivered to them. Through emergency planning and preparedness for people with disabilities, in addition to raising awareness of how people live with pandisabilities, NWT Disabilities Council is a dedicated collection of individuals with a passion for helping others. Furthermore, as the only pan-disability, territorial organization which delivers life-long support and services throughout the Northwest Territory, NWT Disabilities Council has become not only award-winning but, most importantly, lifechanging. Denise McKee, CEO, told us: “We amplify the voice of the Arctic and its uniqueness in addressing issues of concern for people living with disabilities and to inform of the intersectionality of Indigeneity and disability in remote and isolated communities. “We also research wise practices and actively participate in advisory roles, both nationally and internationally, to explore new paths for Individuals with a disability are experts on their own life, deserving of the utmost respect, dignity, and individual autonomy.
