Recently, we profiled the firm to find out more about the exceptional services they provide and caught up with Co-founder, MikeMoran following his recent win in CV’s 2019 Corporate Excellence Awards where he was recognised as theMost Influential CEO inHealthcare 2019 - United Kingdom. Thriving Healthcare Company Committed to Delivering Innovative Care Established in 2015, Proton Partners Inter- national is building a network of oncology centres across the UK known as the Rutherford Cancer Centres. The company is made up of four divisions, the Rutherford Cancer Centres, Rutherford Diag- nostics, Rutherford Innovations and Rutherford Estates. Co-founded by CEO Mike Moran in 2015, Mike begins by telling us more about the Rutherford Cancer Centres and the various types of therapies they provide to cancer patients. “The Rutherford Cancer Centres are a network of state-of-the-art cancer centres operated by Proton Partners International. The centres provide conventional therapies such as chemotherapy, radiother- apy and immunotherapy but also offer high energy proton beam therapy. They were the first to bring high energy proton beam therapy to the UK in Spring last year through their first centre in Wales, the Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales in Newport. Over the years, they have treated over 170 patients across the network with at least 35 patients at the Wales centre being treated with proton beam therapy. The network exists of three operational centres in New- port, Reading and Northumberland, with a fourth under construction in Liverpool. Many of the patients at the Rutherford Cancer Centres are private paying patients, insured patients, and NHS patients should they be referred by the NHS. Since January 2019, the Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales signed an agreement with the Welsh gov- ernment that will see adult cancer patients in Wales being treated with proton beam therapy at the centre on the NHS in Wales.” Enabling Proton Partners Interna- tional to deliver these incredible services, is the experienced, com- mitted and passionate team who run the Rutherford Cancer Centres. When discussing the internal cul- ture, Mike is keen to highlight the significant role the team play in the overall success of the company. “The people who run the Ruther- ford Cancer Centres are the most important resource for the network. The staff has grown considerably over the past three years and each of the centres attract highly skilled workers from various sectors, as well as provide significant regener- ation to its surrounding areas. “Beyond medical staff, each of the centres house highly complex equipment which require specialists to be at hand around the clock to ensure that patients are receiving the treatments they need.” Looking ahead to what the future holds, Mike signs off by revealing the exciting plans which lie in the pipeline for the team at Proton Part- ners International which includes delivering on the firm’s mission to fulfil the vision they have had since their inception in 2015. “When Proton Partners Interna- tional was founded four years ago, it set out a vision to make proton beam therapy accessible to 75% of the UK population within a 90-min- ute drive. This would require eight centres in total. Three centres have already been built with a fourth one under construction; this increased capacity has already drastically im- proved UK cancer care as a whole. The UK lagged behind the rest of Europe and North America when it came to proton beam therapy provi- sion, it is now on course to be right at the forefront within Europe.
