We invited Simon to tell us more about the range of services his firmoffers. Drawing on over 18 years’ experience, Solway Consulting Group trades internationally with clients in the UK, USA, EU, India, China and Malaysia from its headquaters in Kirkcudbrightshire in Scotland. As Principal Consultant, Simon Watson Pain is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and of the Energy Institute, a Chartered member of IOSH and a registered Health & Safety Consultant (OSHCR). The Solway Consulting Group works primarily within the chemicals, pharmaceuticals, utilities, construction and consulting industries, providing all clients with the very highest standard of service, as Simon explains. “Here at Solway Consulting, we believe that providing an exceptional and creative service to clients is the key to getting personal satisfaction from our daily work. As we do no direct advertising, recognition from clients is an important motivator and results in business growth. “Central to our service offering is creative, high impact training, applying the principle that “If you are smiling I can teach you anything”. Much of our training is focused at the senior management level and uses innovative ideas to convey memorable messages. We have developed a series of Health & safety management games to increase the impact of important messages, including the Solway Consulting “Risk” game and the “Consequences” game.” In addition, the group also carries out audits and auditor training. These audits are usually at the Management or Specialist Level and can be general, process safety, regulatory or due diligence audits. The auditing uses an innovative approach developed over a period of 23 years by Simon Pain and follow the principles laid down in his book “Safety, Health & Environmental Auditing – A Practical approach” (published by CRC Press, USA, ISBN No 978-1- 4398-2947-9. A second edition is about to be published). The concept applies human factors to auditing and instead of advocating the normal interrogation style of interaction used by most auditors, aims to get auditees to volunteer information without upsetting them. Solway Consulting have developed a novel user friendly electronic protocol called “Plaudit 2” which is used for level 3 and Process Safety audits. The concept also uses our own innovative concept of “Convergence” which is a unique process that helps auditors arrive at management systems actions rather than a long list. Because of this work in the last two years Simon has carried out a thorough review of the Corporate Auditing processes of a large multi-national Chemical Company based in the USA and implemented proposals and training to remedy the gaps. In the past he has developed audit systems for such blue chip companies as ICI, ABB, Corus and Petronas. Looking to the future, Simon is keen to emphasise the latest developments which will help lead his firm to even greater success. “Our latest innovation is the development of the SHEEMS system. This product is aimed at the small and medium sized enterprise market and provides a low cost facility to allow small organisations to instantly convert a standard meeting room into an effective Emergency Control Centre. The development has been incubating for the last 3 years but during the last 6 months is now at the prototype stage with full product launch due within the next few months. Feedback from existing clients about the prototype product is extremely positive. “The SHEEMS Kit allows small companies to have a framework to guide them through a range of different types of emergencies with the minimum of training and re-training. It provides a system that is permanently installed but is transportable in the event that the location is compromised by gas release or power loss. “This SHEEMS venture is a new departure for Solway Consulting, and as a result we will be expanding our offerings from training and consultancy to include the manufacturing, sales and distribution of the newly developed SHEEMS product.
