HR and Training Awards 2017

CORPORATE VISION / 2017 HR & Training Awards 13 , Ceviche is a London based Peruvian restaurant which has developed an innovative employee engagement programme to ensure satisfaction among its staff and reduce turnover. We spoke to HR and TrainingManager Georgina Stephens to learnmore about the company’s innovative approach. Best Employee Engagement Program 2017 - UK Established in 2012, by Peruvian chef, restaurateur and award-winning author Martin Morales and his dedicated team, Ceviche employs a vast array of waiting and kitchen staff, and as such the firm has to work hard to ensure employee satisfaction, as Georgina explains. “In hospitality employee turnover is always a key challenge and the war for talent rages. As opposed to using money to incentivise people, we decided to focus on helping them to lead a happier more balanced life overall. “To combat this, our CEO Martin personally held a two-day course with all of our senior leaders looking at how their life balance, helping them to look at their personal bigger picture and supporting them to decide how to make their life a happier one. The feedback was incredible and the managers attitudes have visibly changed and their positive energy has risen. This is turn has positively affected how they engage the team.” Following this Georgina trained as a life coach and held sessions with the teams, working through a life wheel with them and coaching them to find ways to balance their life and work commitments; a challenge that is very prominent in the hospitality industry. The coaching was held in small groups and then individually for those who wanted more support. She explains how these sessions work and the key areas they focus on. “Communication and comradery with team members was also a key focus of the strategy. This was addressed through feedback breakfasts with the teams to hear their views and to learn from them, as well as having all the team together for awards to celebrate our achievement. Every member of the senior team is present in the sites and happy to chat with anyone as we are all working together. The culture of listening has been hugely impactful and helps us to maintain individuality as part of an awesome team.” Fundamentally, since implementation this programme has led to a 48% decrease in staff turnover year on year, constituting a huge financial saving to the business of at least £86955, and as such moving forward Ceviche will be seeking to continue utilising and adapting it to ensure continued success and savings.
