18 CORPORATE VISION / 2017 HR & Training Awards , Medecins Sans Frontieres (DoctorsWithout Borders) is an international humanitarian aid organisation that provides emergencymedical assistance to populations in danger in more than 70 countries. Director of Domestic Human Resources for the U.S. office David Epstein talks us through his role in the organisation’s achievement and his drive to support disadvantaged people around the world. Best Humanitarian Aid HR Director 2017 - North East USA David is the Director of Domestic Human Resources for the U.S. office of Doctors Without Borders/ MSF-USA, as well as being a member of the management team, and working on strategic human resources issues ranging from diversity and talent management to expatriate benefits, training and wellness initiatives. He also serves as the organization’s U.S. subject matter expert. He explains his organisation’s aims in detail and how he works towards achieving them. “As an organization, at Doctors Without Borders we provide staff with a training budget of $2500 per year which can be used for career growth and development. This money expands to $5000 if pursuing a program that is directly linked to our mission (i.e. public health). We have an on-line training platform, “MSF Campus,” in which employees may take a range of courses online from medical and nursing to management skills. Our training manager works with staff and their managers to develop a professional development plan. “Fundamentally, our goal for training is to help staff and managers develop the core competencies to succeed at our organization and beyond. We want managers to be great leaders and staff to be able to attain skills to excel at their current roles and be developed and prepared for future positions.” Looking ahead, David has many exciting plans for Doctors Without Borders, as he understands that operating in such a vital, ever changing market, adaptability is crucial. “Ultimately, the key to training is to anticipate what skills staff need for the future. The speed of change is so rapid that it is unlikely that one’s job will look the same in 3 to 5 years. As such, being adaptable is key and identifying core competencies needed for future success. Therefore, at Doctors Without Borders our future plan is to establish a leadership academy that trains our staff to become future leaders. We will develop a series of courses and tools to help prepare them for the challenges they face.” Company: Medecins Sans Frontieres Contact: David Epstein Contact Email: [email protected] Address: 333 Seventh Avenue, 2nd Floor, New York, 10001, USA Website: www.doctorswithoutborders.org Best Humanitarian Aid HR Director 2017 - North East USA HR170013
