Corporate Vision Issue 9

CORPORATE VISION / Issue 9 2018 47 , 1807CV26 Tyromer Inc. is a company established by the University ofWaterloo to commercialize a rubber devulcanization technology that helps return scrap tire rubber back into new tirematerial, enabling a truly circular economy. We profile the firmas we seek to discovermore about the secrets behind Tyromer Inc’s exceptional success. Tyromer Provides Sustainable and Financially Viable Solution to the Scrap Tire Problem Tyromer Inc. helps turn old tires into new tires again. The firm uses a carbon dioxide assisted twin-screw extrusion process to continuously convert scrap tire rubber into TDP (Tire-Derived Polymer), without the use of chemical solvents or devulcanization chemicals. TDP can replace virgin tire material at 20% + with excellent results, lowering costs and conserving energy. Tyromer targets the tire industry to implement a truly circular economy and turn scrap tires into a much more valuable resource. In addition to this, Tyromer is the only company offering non- chemical devulcanization of scrap tire rubber on a commercially viable scale. Professor Costas Tzoganakis of the University of Waterloo invented this technology in the lab, and we have worked for the past decade to perfect the process. As much as the firm has achieved throughout the years, they still see an amazing opportunity to do more; Costas remains the Company’s CTO and leads their technical development. As for Tyromer’s overall mission, devulcanization has been the ‘holy grail’ of tire recycling for decades, because it allows scrap tires to be turned back into new tires, a truly circular economy. Until now, the technology has not existed on a commercially viable scale without using chemicals. Tyromer’s technology works, and it is now their mission to share this technology with the tire industry and work together to create a significant impact on end-of-life tires. Moving forward, the future holds immense opportunity – not just for Tyromer, but for the entire tire industry as a whole. The firm has the opportunity to create a circular economy, where scrap tires can be recycled and reused for their originally intended purpose, as tires again. For their work in tire recycling, Tyromer received the 2018 Edison Gold Medal in the category of Energy & Sustainability/Resource Reuse, and was also awarded a 2018 Sustainability Leadership Award from Business Intelligence Group. The Company hopes this is just the start and strives to create significant impact on tire recycling around the world.
