Over recent years the school has flourished thanks to the efforts of a committed and dedicated team of administrators and teachers. Just under three years ago, the school had a mere ninety-four students. While financially sound, the school had drifted from its mission. A new executive director was hired in 2016, and since that time, the school has transformed into a better and brighter version of itself. Today, the Brighton School has 145 students in grades first through twelfth while projecting an August 2019 opening enrolment in the neighbourhood of 150-155 mission appropriate students. Since 2016, the school has added three reading therapy programs, has established a group of well-trained teachers, and has added a vibrancy to its small school that continues to be dedicated to driving change in the teaching of children with learning difficulties. This past May, Brighton graduated a dozen seniors. Nine will be moving on to college in fields such as education, engineering, and psychology, two have established their own businesses and the last student has entered the welding workforce. Based on each student’s psychoeducational evaluation, the school’s population possesses a very diverse set of needs. To meet the needs of its unique student body, The Brighton School employs an eclectic array of programs, approaches and strategies. The school’s innovative curriculum embeds multi-sensory (auditory, visual, kinesthetic and tactile) strategies in all content areas, while simultaneously developing and reinforcing executive functioning skills and social/ emotional development. This approach continues beyond the regular classrooms into art, technology and physical education classes as well. “Take content off the page, and put it into the hands of the kids.” is a mantra heard throughout the school. Done well, learning is translated in a way students can understand. Brighton’s students need to touch learning, build learning, and create learning through all their senses. The school’s students require multiple experiences with content to solidify learning. Teaching students the way they learn is a way of life at The Brighton School. On average, a dyslexic student needs up to 1500 exposures before learning is firmly placed into long-term memory. In the age of more content at a quicker pace, The Brighton School aims to facilitate learning as much as possible, working with students to understand their needs. The school’s administration
