Feature Why Consistency Beats Talent: Dave Ryding on the Discipline Behind Lasting Success This exclusive interview with Dave Ryding was conducted by Tabish Ali of the Motivational Speakers Agency. Dave Ryding built his career on an unfashionable formula: doing the basics well, working harder than the competition and repeating it for long enough to make the difference. The five-time Olympian became the first British skier to win an Alpine World Cup race with his historic slalom victory at Kitzbühel in 2022, after a career that began on dry slopes in Lancashire rather than the traditional Alpine system. Champions Speakers In this exclusive interview with the High Performance Speakers Agency, Ryding explains why consistency can outweigh perceived talent, why trusting the process still requires honest self-evaluation, and how the discipline, teamwork and setbacks of elite sport shaped his approach to lasting success. Question 1. What do high performers often misunderstand about the relationship between sacrifice, discipline and long-term success? Dave Ryding: “I think people overcomplicate it. They get it the wrong way around. They try to make the process really hard, clichéd or buzzworthy, and forget that it’s actually the hard work that matters. “I believe you’ve got to do the basics as well as you can and then work as hard as you can. Don’t overcomplicate the process. Don’t try to find the biggest buzzword or the newest fad that you think might help. “Do the basics very well and commit over a long period of time. If you’re willing to do that, that’s when you start to see proper improvement and progression.” Question 2. How do you distinguish natural talent from the advantages created by exposure, consistency and sustained work? Dave Ryding: “Talent is spoken about a lot, but I always think: what is talent? It’s so hard to define. “Say you have two children at 10 years old. Is talent in one 10-yearold simply because they’ve been exposed to more things than the other 10-year-old? It doesn’t necessarily mean one is more talented than the other. “Consistency and work are always going to outdo a talented person because, over a long period of time, you’re going to get much better than a “talented” person who isn’t working hard. “If I look at myself, when I was 16 and racing on snow, I wasn’t even ranked in the top 15 in Great Britain for my year of birth. “Looking back, would I be described as untalented, or had I simply not been exposed to as much as the other people at that age? “Once I got that exposure and was able to apply my work ethic and consistency, I went flying past them and they dropped away. It wasn’t that they were more talented. They had just been exposed to more things than I had at that specific time.” Question 3. How do you balance commitment to a process with the need to recognise when that process needs to change? Dave Ryding: “Mindset is key and trusting the process is key. However, I don’t think you should blindly trust the process. It’s much more about having an open and closed mindset. “You need an open mindset to evaluate whether your process is working and whether the plan is working, and then be honest with yourself and say, “Okay, it’s not working. I need to either improve myself in this area or tinker with the plan to get more out of myself.” “You need that open mindset to evaluate yourself, and a closed mindset to get up every morning with the discipline and sacrifice to go about the process. “But if you’re not evaluating the process, and your process is wrong, then it’s not going to work either. “You’ve got to blend both. You have to stay open, and the key is being honest with yourself to make good changes to your process, not easy changes.” Question 4. In a culture drawn to instant gratification and visible wins, what does sustainable success actually require? Dave Ryding: “A quick win isn’t necessarily a very big win. They’re normally little things that make you feel good, give you a bit of dopamine, and within a day you’ve probably forgotten about them. “Lasting legacy or lasting success requires sacrifice. If you get a big win, that’s going to stay with you longer and give you more motivation for a longer period of time. “It’s about keeping the blinkers on and not getting obsessed with little wins here, there and everywhere that don’t really mean much. “I like to say, “Train in the dark.” “If you’re training in the dark rather than showing everyone what you’re doing to get the quick win of someone saying something nice on social media, just keep your head down and train hard. “The big win is going to mean way more to you. It’s going to put you on a different pedestal to everyone else. If it’s business and you get a big win in business, it can be life-changing, just like in sport. “Always stay focused on the big goal. You need to have small goals along the way, but don’t look for the quick, easy wins. Look for the methodical wins that will take you to the next step. “If you always look to go one step at a time, walking then running before sprinting, that’s the best way to get to the big win.”

Corporate Vision Kalos Transaction Advisory: The Firm Organised for Transactions BuiltbyalumnioftheBig4,KalosisanindependentNorth American transaction advisory firm headquartered in Calgary, Canada, with offices in Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, New York and Los Angeles. Organised for transactions instead of service lines, Kalos advises financial sponsors, strategic buyers and sellers, business owners, lenders, and management teams throughout the transaction lifecycle. As it is named Best Financial Due Diligence Firm 2026 – North America in this programme, Mackenzie Regent, CoFounder and Managing Partner of Kalos, caught up with us for more. In ancient times, ‘Kalos’ was a term used to describe only the most honourable, morally virtuous soldiers on the battlefield. Whilst its work thousands of years later is a far cry from this, Kalos Transaction Advisory has nevertheless chosen this name as a reflection of the high standards it sets for itself across everything it does. For its clients, the name of this leading transaction advisory firm speaks to its integrity, excellence, and the pursuit of doing things well – for its clients, colleagues, and across the transactions it is entrusted with. With capabilities spanning financial due diligence, valuation and financial modelling, transaction tax, transaction accounting advisory, transaction agreements and closing mechanisms, and closing and post-closing advisory, Kalos is building an integrated advisory platform designed to steward better transaction outcomes for clients. These better outcomes begin with good judgement, exercised by good people. Kalos realises this through a differentiator it calls Connected Judgement: the belief that better transaction outcomes require professionals who understand not only their own technical disciplines, but also how their work connects to the broader transaction and its commercial consequences. This transaction-first approach distinguishes Kalos from traditional professional services firms, which are typically organised around siloed, individual service lines. Another concept integral to Kalos is Transaction Stewardship, which reflects the firm’s commitment to carrying important issues through the lifecycle of a deal. Rather than allowing insight to become disconnected from consequence as the deal moves between disciplines, advisers or transaction stages, Kalos ensures matters are appropriately carried forward. Again, this comes back to the belief that clients experience transaction outcomes, not service lines, and that this is where the firm needs to position itself to add the most value for them. Exploring this in more detail, Mackenzie told us: “An issue identified in financial diligence may affect tax, the purchase agreement, working capital, accounting treatment, valuation, or post-closing matters. Our model is designed to connect those implications rather than leave the client to bridge the gaps.” This requires more than technically correct work. It means understanding the consequences of its findings and helping clients to make better decisions. And this is something that starts right from within. The blend of real technical depth and an understanding of where their work fits into the firm as a whole is the basis of a team and a culture that are both highly collaborative and intentionally humble. Quick growth has followed, but the firm has worked hard to preserve an environment where people can ask questions, challenge one another, share unfinished thoughts, and pull in the right expertise, all without people having to worry about hierarchy or boundaries. “Culture is not separate from performance in transaction advisory; it directly affects it.” Transactions move quickly, often involve imperfect information, and require professionals to exercise sound judgement under pressure. In that environment, trust, responsiveness and collaboration directly influence the quality of advice and the outcomes achieved. To cultivate these qualities across Kalos, the firm invests heavily in coaching and in-person time, allowing people from across disciplines and even offices to build relationships with one another. For Kalos, this is what success looks like: delivering successful outcomes whilst building a place where talented people can do the best work of their careers. Building on its technical quality, culture and the trust of its clients, Kalos has focused on preserving these foundations while scaling
October 2026 | 9 rapidly to meet the evolving needs of the market. Over the past 12 months, the firm has expanded its advisory capabilities into four new areas, welcomed six new partners, established a five-office North American presence and completed its first eight-figure capital raise, while continuing to invest in the infrastructure required to support approximately 200 transactions annually. Underpinning these developments is a deliberate approach to growth, including a willingness to step back from opportunities that do not align with the firm’s long-term vision. Mackenzie added: “Growth is valuable only if the firm becomes stronger as it grows.” Rather than pursuing geographic expansion for its own sake, Kalos has focused on opportunities that strengthen its capabilities, deepen its client relationships and support its long-term vision. For clients, this promotes further trust. Detailing some of the plans defining Kalos’ pipeline over the next five years, Mackenzie spoke of its goal to become the most trusted transaction advisory firm in North America, and how this starts with it continuing to build a transaction advisory platform that is genuinely integrated across the continent. This involves connecting financial due diligence, valuation, tax, transaction accounting, purchase agreement advisory, closing mechanisms and post-closing execution around the way clients actually experience transactions. It is also impossible to ignore the role technology will play in the future of almost every business, and Kalos is no exception. The firm is thus continuing to invest in data, automation, and AI-enabled workflows, enabling it to improve speed, consistency, and insight, all whilst being deliberate about preserving the professional judgement its clients expect. Mackenzie summarised: “Over the next five years, we will continue to deepen our presence in key Canadian and US markets, attract exceptional senior talent, and build the commercial and technology infrastructure required to scale – all without losing the entrepreneurial culture and senior-level client experience that distinguish Kalos today.” As this standout transaction advisory firm in North America continues to work towards its long-term vision, Mackenzie was excited to share with us that 2026 has itself been full of milestones, including continued development of its integrated advisory platform and expansion into New York and Los Angeles. The expansion into New York and Los Angeles represents more than the establishment of new offices. By bringing experienced transaction advisory leaders into the platform, Kalos is strengthening its ability to connect financial diligence, transaction agreements, negotiation, closing mechanisms and post-closing execution across jurisdictions. This reflects a broader trend within Kalos, with clients increasingly engaging multiple disciplines on the same transaction. By carrying issues from financial due diligence through negotiation, closing and post-closing execution, the firm seeks to reduce fragmentation and provide greater continuity of advice throughout the transaction lifecycle. With this in mind, we asked Mackenzie to take a step back from Kalos’ position now and explain how someone just starting out in the world of transactions could begin to establish themselves. She replied: “Learn how transactions work on a broader level. Understand what matters to buyers, sellers, lenders, management teams and other stakeholders, and learn to translate analysis into consequences and decisions. I would also encourage people to be curious beyond their immediate workstream. Ask why a diligence finding matters to the purchase agreement, how working capital affects value, or what happens to an issue after closing.” “Transactions are a small world, and trust built early in a career can follow you for decades.” A transaction-first firm set apart by a mix of deep expertise, a unique philosophy, and a commitment to upholding the values associated with its name, Kalos Transaction Advisory is more than deserving of being recognised as the Best Financial Due Diligence Firm 2026 – North America as part of this year’s Corporate Excellence Awards feature. Corporate Vision Located in Radstock, near Bath, Downside School is a co-educational independent boarding and day school for students aged 11 to 18 years old. At its core, the school strives to promote a culture of unselfish love, integrity, humility, and leadership through service and responsibility. It encourages each student to embrace numerous academic, sporting, and co-curricular opportunities and contribute purposefully to their school and wider community. We took a closer look at Downside School below, following its recent recognition in the Education and Training Awards 2026. “Downside School’s vision, as a Catholic and Benedictine school with Christ at its centre, is to be a bright light in education and to inspire service in our world.” Downside School is one of England’s leading full boarding schools, with 72% of its student base made up of full boarders. This high statistic is no surprise, as every boarder at Downside School is provided with unrivalled pastoral support, a strong sense of community, and important quality time with their friends. There is never a dull moment at the school, as every weekend is filled with a wide range of activities that cater to different houses, ages, and interests. As one of the remaining traditional full boarding schools in the UK, the school’s life revolves around its five boarding houses: First, Second, and Third Form boys join Smythe House before moving up to Barlow or Roberts, while the two girl Houses, Caverel and Isabella, welcome pupils from the First Form to Upper Six. Each House boasts its own distinctive spirit and traditions but are united by the same values and ethos that define Downside School. Student safety is of top priority at Downside School, ensured through a dedicated Health Centre with eight beds for students. Healthcare services are offered 24/7 during term time, delivered by a team of practitioners capable of navigating anything from a routine check-up to a medical emergency. The Centre also delivers health education through a variety of forms, from 1:1 and small group sessions to information leaflets and takeaway resources. A strong academic school, Downside School has built its educational offering around the concept of transformation, which is not only deeply embedded within the school’s philosophy of learning, but also in the Benedictine tradition. This concept suggests that the purpose of education is to transform the learner into their best possible self and, therefore, it is not the final result as measured in a comparative table that matters but the magnitude of their transformation. When Downside School’s are measured comparatively, across academics, sports, and culture, they prove to be excellent. This is because at Downside School, pupils achieve transformation through the process of self-fulfilment rather than through the damaging pressure of objective attainment for its own sake. Staff will identify and nurture each pupil’s greatest talents, strengthening and balancing their individuality to prepare them to lead a “life fully lived”. Alongside strong academics, Downside School places an equal focus on developing the character of the pupil, with an emphasis on moral courage, integrity, and service. By living and working together, students develop personal discipline, active listening and social skills, selfawareness, confidence, independence, and compassion. The school’s thriving community life enables pupils to gain deeper understanding and respect for those from different cultures, beliefs, and traditions, promoting the celebration of diversity across the student body. Through the celebration of Mass, educational retreats, routine House prayers, and the practice of Lectio Divina, Downside School provides its pupils with countless opportunities to explore their faith and spirituality. The School Chaplaincy consists of a Priest Chaplain and a Lay Chaplain, supported by student leaders and enriched by visits from members of the Manquehue Apostolic Movement. Together, they play a central role at Downside School, guiding pupils to encounter Christ throughout all aspects of their daily life. Beyond education, Downside School stays with its pupils for life. Any student who has attended the school, whether for one term or their entire educational career, becomes a member of the exclusive St Gregory’s Society. Known as Old Gregorians, this thriving global community boasts more than 8,000 individuals and enjoys regular reunions worldwide. The network serves as a vital lifeline for alumni as they transition into the wider world of work, providing them with invaluable support, expertise, and professional opportunities. We at Corporate Vision Magazine are proud to present Downside School with the UK’s Excellence Award in Catholic Education 2026. October 2026 | 11 “This is the story of what can happen when technology and human expertise evolve together.” What first began as one bold idea devised by a group of property professionals has grown into one of South Africa’s leading property management technology businesses. Based in Somerset West, WeconnectU has developed an end-to-end ecosystem that leverages streamlined solutions and decades of first-hand property experience to solve its clients’ biggest challenges: compliance, manageability, scalability, and profitability. WeconnectU’s three core areas of operations span Community Asset Management, with technology supporting the increasingly complex financial, compliance, and operational requirements involved in managing community schemes; and Rental Asset Management, through technology connecting the operational, financial, and increasingly intelligent management of rental portfolios; In 2021, the company launched RedRabbit. This system extends the WeconnectU ecosystem into the physical management of property assets through inspections, maintenance, contractors, communication, and portfolio intelligence. Each of these three solution areas have already achieved significant market traction since their launch, including RedRabbit, WeconnectU’s youngest solution. These solutions are the result of a decade-long journey. “Almost ten years ago, we believed property managers had the opportunity to become far more than administrators,” Schalk told us. “They could become asset managers: professionals who use information, insight, and technology to protect assets, improve performance, manage risk, and deliver greater value to property owners, investors, trustees, and other stakeholders.” As WeconnectU evolved, as did the industry. Property professionals navigate increasing regulation, growing client expectations, economic pressure, and rapidly evolving technology. Despite these adversities, WeconnectU has watched its clients embrace new ways of working, challenge existing models, and increasingly recognise that their value lies not simply in administering property but in helping clients manage assets more intelligently. “Ten years of technology. Ten years of partnership. Ten years of an industry becoming more valuable.” At the core of this evolution lies a deep desire to create more valued and valuable property managers. “More valuable property managers are able to spend less time trapped in repetitive administration and more time applying their knowledge, experience, and judgement where it creates meaningful value for clients,” Schalk explained. “More valued property managers are increasingly recognised as Corporate Vision is proud to recognise WeconnectU as South Africa’s Best Property Management Software Company for 2026 in the Technology Innovator Awards 2026. This marks the company’s fourth consecutive recognition, a particularly meaningful milestone as WeconnectU also prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary next year. In the wake of this significant achievement, Director Schalk van der Merwe told us more below. Best Property Management Software Company 2026 – South Africa trusted professionals responsible for helping protect, manage, and enhance valuable property assets. For WeconnectU, technology is an important enabler of that transition, but it is not the end goal. While technology can be instrumental in automating repetitive processes, organising information, identifying trends, improving visibility, and creating capacity, the company asserts that experience, relationships, judgement, empathy, and the ability to advise a client remain fundamentally human. The next decade, therefore, remains connected to the same purpose with which this journey began: creating more valuable and valued property managers. The scale of the WeconnectU ecosystem offers endless opportunities to achieve this mission, leveraging ten years of unrivalled expertise to interact with a growing volume of property, financial, operational, compliance, and maintenance data across Community Asset Management and Rental Asset Management. Accumulating this data, however, is not enough; WeconnectU aims to turn that data into intelligence that helps property professionals create greater value. In 2027, WeconnectU will release the inaugural South African Asset Intelligence Report, drawing on the depth of insight available across the ecosystem to provide a broader view of the health and performance of professional managed property assets across five key dimensions: financial health, operational health, physical asset health, governance health, and stakeholder experience. This is an important next step in WeconnectU’s journey from enabling property administration to supporting intelligent asset management. “For us, this is a natural extension of our purpose. For almost ten years, technology has helped property managers become more efficient and effective. The next opportunity is to help them become more informed, more insightful, and more influential,” Schalk concluded. He continued: “As we approach ten years of WeconnectU, perhaps the achievement we are most proud of is not how much technology has changed, but how much more technology has allowed people to do. The 2026 Corporate Vision recognition belongs to our team, but equally to the clients and property professionals who have walked this journey with us, challenged us to keep improving, and demonstrated what becomes possible when human expertise is enabled by intelligent technology. “We may build the technology, but we are building the journey together.” Contact: Schalk van der Merwe Company: WeconnectU Web Address: www.weconnectu.co.za
