Transforming the Way Corporations do Business Established in 2016, Ortus Strategies’ mis- sion is to empower corporate ethical leadership, help com- panies develop and implement effective strategies to respond to crises, rebuild ethics and compliance programs, as well as achieve lasting transformations. Alongside being one of the first firms to offer advisory services that seamlessly integrate crisis response and transformation-focused approach to organizational change, Ortus also helps CEOs and Board members to develop strategic roadmaps which bring clarity to complex crisis situations, especially those triggered by ethical lapses and misconduct. The firm has a particular focus on supporting global organizations who are facing corporate criminal investigations which involve United States prosecutors. José begins by going into further detail about Ortus, informing us about the services the team provides, as well as the clients that they serve. “Here at Ortus, many of our clients are prominent global or- ganizations with valuable brands that find themselves embroiled in corporate investigations in the United States and other jurisdictions, often in relation to allegations of corruption and other forms of misconduct. Acting as a trusted advisor, a hands-on coach or a credible, independent reviewer, Ortus works with these organizations to help them over- come crises, develop strategic plans for change, restore the trust of their stakeholders, and ultimately, transform the way they do business.” Leading the firm, is CEO José Hernandez who began his career as the founding partner of FGI Europe, a consultancy firm that he set up with former FBI director, Judge Louis J. Freeh, in 2008. Today, he still acts as a Senior Advisor for Freeh Group International Solutions. Through- out his career, José has worked on some of largest fraud, bribery, and money laundering cases on record, as well as advising clients in a diverse range of sectors such as international sport, retail and engineering, to name but a few. Over the years, José has received countless awards for his impeccable service, and recently he was selected in CV’s 2019 Corporate Excellence where he was righteously awarded the accolade Most Influential CEO of the Year 2019 - Management Consulting. Under this award-winning guidance, is the committed, hard-working and experienced team which forms the backbone of Ortus. When discussing the internal culture, José is keen to highlight the significant role the team play in the overall success of the firm. “At Ortus, we have a small core team of strategy, ethics and governance experts in-house and draw on a much broader global network of professionals including accountants, law- yers, investigators, technology specialists, and sector-specific advisors. This network is incred- ibly important to our business, and allows us to assist clients on complex engagements anywhere in the world.” In 2018, José published a booked titled Broken Business: Seven Steps to Reform Good Companies Gone Bad which focused on bringing together the firm’s experience and ideas on ethical change in a clear, engag- ing and relatable text. Since then the book has been published in Dutch and English, with both Korean and German translations forthcoming. Bringing the interview to a close, José signs off by revealing the exciting plans which lie in the pipeline for the firm, touching on how the team are currently promoting the book. “At the moment, we are now actively promoting the book to bring attention to its messages on how corporate leaders can ‘empower integrity’ within their organizations to create more ethical, profitable, and sustainable companies.
