Most Impactful Podcast 2021 - Australia Humans of Purpose is all about showcasing local purpose-driven leaders whose work is having a significant social impact. Having just clocked up over 200 episodes, and 200+ hours of conversations with people from across not-for-profits, social enterprises, philanthropy and government, the aim is to inspire listeners to consider how they can engage with or support meaningful work and organisations that are creating positive social change. “We want to encourage our listeners to listen, connect and grow with us,” explains Mike, the brains behind the podcast. “We are successful when our listeners change their mindset, adopt new and meaningful career paths or choose to support and connect with our inspiring guests. Our latest listener survey conducted in mid-2021 indicates that about 50% of our listeners have met up with podcast guests, indicating that we are more than just a podcast- we have created a connected community” The weekly podcast, which Mike sources and produces single-handedly from end-to-end, runs on average for about 45 minutes to 1 hour in length and Mike has been fortunate to have recorded podcasts with members of parliament at Federal and State level, and leaders of government at State and Local level. He has hosted triple gold medal winning Olympians, Bhutanese monks, CEOs of major purpose-driven organisations and pioneers in medical research and innovation. A recent highlight for Mike and the Humans of Purpose journey was the opportunity to produce a podcast series on the state of the mental health system in Australia. The Mental Wealth series, sponsored by Cooper Investors, was a Humans of Purpose side project (10 episodes) that concluded in early 2021 and gave Mike the opportunity to speak to the leading mental health experts in Australia on how to improve our system. “As part of the growth of Humans of Purpose, and our storytelling portfolio, we are committed through our parent company, Purposeful, to produce more stories of people and organisations creating social impact and to consider how we can create podcasts that foster attitude and behaviour change in important areas such as mental health.” Mike is deeply committed to freedom of expression and employee’s rights to a private life outside of work. This stems from his previous study as a Master of Law (Human Rights) graduate and a strong personal belief that social progress requires preservation and promotion of human rights as being fundamental to a strong democratic society. A pivotal moment in the podcast’s growth journey occurred when his former Victorian Public Sector employer threatened to sack him if he continued producing Humans of Purpose after work hours. For Mike, this was a game-changer as he simply could not work for an employer that would not support this vital work aimed at improving civic society. Fortunately, Mike’s new employer Spark Strategy is totally supportive of his work and champions the podcast through its social media channels and newsletter. Mike also cites new season’s major sponsor and partner digital agency Neon Treehouse as a major driver of the global growth of the podcast.
