A step-down transformer is a device that reduces the voltage of an alternating current (AC) power supply. It has two parts: a primary winding, a secondary winding, and an iron core inside.

When electricity goes through the main winding, it makes a magnetic field in the iron. This makes electricity in the secondary winding, but not as strong.

Transformers work because of “Faraday’s Law.” It says how strong the electricity is depends on how fast the magnetic field changes.

A step-down transformer has more turns in its primary winding and fewer turns in its secondary winding. If there are more turns in the big coil than in the small one, the EMF generated in the secondary winding is less than the primary input.

That’s why the secondary coil has lower voltage power in a step-down transformer. Step down transformers convert higher voltage power into lower voltage power.

Working Principle of the Step-Down Transformer

Faraday’s Law is how a transformer works. It’s all about transmission between two windings, which requires mutual induction.

When the amount of magnetism around a wire changes, it makes electricity flow in the wire. This electricity depends on how fast the magnetism changes.

The number of windings in the transformer is used to calculate the induced electromotive force. This is called the “turns ratio”.

If the secondary coil has fewer turns than the primary coil, it doesn’t get much of that changing magnetism. So, the electricity in the secondary winding is weaker than in the primary winding.
