Career progression is an important aspect to consider for employees when accepting a job, but it should also be at the forefront of employers’ minds if they want to get the best out of their staff. Alongside this, there are multiple ways that progression can help a business.

There’s thousands of searches per month around advice when it comes to getting a promotion and pay rise. So, read on to discover how you can implement career progression into your business plan.

Create career progression processes

A new employee should be able to join the business and know the rough trajectory that their career might take if they work hard within the business.

You can encourage career progression by having formal processes in place for employees to progress efficiently through the business. This could be interviewing internally before reaching out to recruiters, encouraging opportunities to shadow other departments, or having frequent opportunities for training.

Conduct regular progression meetings with employees

Having a regular meeting booked with individual employees gives the chance for managers and subordinates to identify areas of development which will lead to progression. This is also an opportunity to work out what an employee’s goals are, and how the company can support those goals.

As a business, there should be processes in place to make employees aware of the developmental opportunities on offer, as the saying goes: you don’t know what you don’t know.

Provide training and up-skilling opportunities for employees

Training and upskilling allow employees to discover more of their abilities and potential within a business. As well as this, it may help to improve employee engagement and sense of value within a company. It’s worth considering that an employee will invest in the company if they can see that their employer invests in them.

Work with employees to create progression plans

Having goals to work towards is incredibly important for career progression, especially internally. Work with employees to discuss how they’d like to progress and how that can be achieved. One way to do this is via a PDP (personal development plan), which is a plan that outlines what skills are needed in order to progress upwards or sideways within a business.
