4 Businesses need to nurture their IT talent Irrespective of the broader economy the fight for IT talent remains and it starts with the companies’ senior managers. With the unemployment level in the UK at its lowest since 1974 and pay growth still failing to keep pace with soaring inflation, organisations looking to build out their IT teams need to look internally. This is according to managed services provider Espria. Clinton Groome, COO at Espria, stated: “For businesses large and small, organisations looking to bolster their IT teams, need to look within the organisation first to ensure that it is offering the most attractive careers.” Compounding this problem is a very clear digital skills gap. A recent survey of 5,000 UK workers - Nature of the UK’s Digital Skills Gap report – clearly identified that the lack of digital skills is hurting the economy in general, and businesses in particular. The report found that around 22% of employees admitted a lack of digital skills was impacting their ability to hit targets and more than half (58%) said they had received no digital training from their employers. “This means that organisations are facing a real double whammy – lack of IT talent for hire and lack of skills amongst the existing workforce,” continued Groome. “The goal must be – as we enter a new year full of economic uncertainty – that all businesses need to nurture their homegrown talent. IT staff need to be allowed a healthy work/ life balance and feel supported in managing external stress factors. For a business to retain its key employees, they really need to demonstrate they value their employees.” “To confirm these ideas, two recent surveys from McKinsey indicate that 87% of companies feel inadequately prepared to address the skill gap, and the majority (61%) of HR professionals believe hiring developers will be their biggest challenge in 2023,” added Groome. Studies show that one of the greatest tools to increase engagement is a comprehensive onboarding process. But providing a great candidate experience from the moment they receive the offer of employment, can be costly and time-consuming. Helen O’Hanlon, HR Director at Espria stated: “My advice is to provide a great candidate experience from the moment an offer of employment is extended. This will inevitably become an important aspect of attracting and retaining top talent and includes everything from the initial job posting and application process, to the offer itself and onboarding. It is a way to show candidates they are valued and that the company is committed to their success.” “While striving to provide this type of experience is admirable, it can also be costly and time-consuming. It may require additional resources and effort to ensure that every touchpoint is smooth and seamless for candidates. This can include creating detailed job descriptions, updating the application process to make it more user-friendly, providing thorough onboarding materials and training, and offering ongoing support and development opportunities for new hires. While it may require a significant investment of time and resources, providing a great candidate experience is worth it in the long run. Not only does it help to attract and retain top talent, but it also has the potential to improve employee satisfaction and productivity, leading to a positive impact on the company’s overall success.” O’Hanlon added, “The results of low engagement, such as increased staff turnover, low productivity and poor performance can all be hugely costly to the bottom line of any organisation. But there is an alternative - nurturing talent positively impacts company culture, growth and commercial success through creating an engaged and committed workforce.” “The message is clear – if organisations want to thrive in what could be a difficult economic environment in 2023, then look to your employees, support them, train them and give them the skills they need to thrive,” concluded O’Hanlon.

Issue 1 2023 5 News The rising cost of running a business forces more companies to think flexibly • Two-thirds (67%) of UK businesses believe offering flexibility is crucial when it comes to competing for people with the most sought-after skills • Half (49%) of businesses saying they have been operating in ‘a candidate’s market’ - one that favours candidates over companies • Over half (52%) of businesses have increased salaries but can’t afford to keep raising wages at the rate they have been going Two in three (67%) UK businesses believe offering flexibility to their workers is crucial if they are to successfully retain and attract talent, according to a new report published today. Businesses realise they cannot compete on salary alone and instead offering flexibility is key to helping companies manage the rising costs of running their businesses. Over half (52%) of businesses have increased salaries to attract talented workers, but say wages rises can’t continue at the rate they have been going. The second ‘Future World of Work’ report from Sonovate explores what flexibility means to businesses and workers throughout the UK, and how businesses are employing flexibility to remain competitive in what’s been a candidate’s market during 2022. It brings together quantitative research from 4,000 people and 500 small and medium-sized business owners, as well as qualitative interviews with senior thought leaders from the future of work, employment and fintech sectors. With half (49%) of businesses saying they have been operating in ‘a candidate’s market’ - one that favours candidates over companies - businesses are having to think more creatively about what flexible benefits they can offer to attract, retain and reward their workers. Seven in ten (70%) businesses surveyed say the most skilled people know their worth and will only work under conditions that suit them. The use of flexibility extends also to retaining the best people already working in permanent positions. Over a third (35%) of businesses report an increase in the proportion of their permanent workforce requesting to switch to contract or temporary roles. Offering greater flexibility is practical for many businesses from financial and operational, as well as recruitment, perspectives. The report finds that businesses are increasingly turning to different forms of flexibility to attract and retain staff, particularly where it isn’t feasible to compete on salaries in a high inflation, recessionary market. More than four in ten (43%) businesses have raised wages for talent but say they cannot afford these inflated salaries for long. The forms of flexible working most favoured by the UK’s businesses include allowing workers to choose their own hours (58%), accepting requests to move from permanent to temporary contracts (58%), and providing employees with utilities and internet subsidies to work from home (also 58%). Other popular options amongst businesses include enabling workers to choose which, or how many, days they work (56%), and enforcing a partial work from home policy (54%). These broadly tally with the desires and expectations of workers. Sonovate’s research finds that 30% of freelance workers want to choose their own hours, as well as how many and which days they work. Three in ten (27%) want to be able to work part time if they wish to, and 25% are keen to work from home when they want to. Richard Prime, Co-Founder & Co-CEO of Sonovate, comments on the findings: “As the cost of living crisis deepens and creates new dynamics and expectations, our understanding of what flexibility means and how it works is fast evolving. Flexibility goes far beyond where and when people work; it encompasses policies that let workers move between permanent and temporary contracts, wider benefit packages for longerterm contractors to match their permanent colleagues, and the right technology to enable flexible working and prompt pay. “The reality we’re seeing on the ground puts paid to the suggestion that a cost of living crisis or high inflation environment will stem the tide of workers requesting or even demanding greater flexibility from the businesses they work for. The future of work is transforming month to month right in front of us. Macro market events that we might think would hinder the shift to a new world of work are instead accelerating and shaping working habits in fascinating ways. “For many businesses, 2022 was the year of the candidate’s market; it remains to be seen whether that will continue into 2023. Either way, if 2023 heralds greater growth, lower inflation and more stability, it’ll be fascinating to see how flexibility extends its reach further and forces more businesses to think creatively about how they attract, recruit and retain.”

A company founded by scientists for scientists, the team at Golden Helix understand what it takes to do great work in their field. They are experts who work tirelessly to help clients succeed in their projects every step of the way, from planning and implementation to training and support after deployment. They are dedicated to delivering excellence, whether a client is running a national initiative or are just starting out, including hospitals, research institutions, government agencies, academic institutions, and pharmaceutical companies around the world. Also playing an enormous role in making sure everyone is familiar with the company’s cutting-edge software technology is its hardworking sales and marketing team. Having been around since 1998, Golden Helix has extensive experience within the genetics space. In particular, it is its seven pillars of differentiation that set it apart from the rest, allowing client labs to focus on what they do best: enabling precision medicine. Single Solution Golden Helix’s award-winning NGS platform allows the streamlining of labs by providing comprehensive cancer and germline diagnostics capabilities, eliminating the need for two different platforms. This simplifies the training of employees, eliminates the need to interact with multiple vendors, and most importantly minimises friction due to incompatible data formats. Scalability While gene panels continue to be part of the testing mix, Golden Helix recognises the industry’s shift towards clinical exomes and whole genomes, therefore its platform supports the analysis of any data size clients may encounter. Throughput Whether a regional lab with an ever-increasing sample volume or a country-wide sequencing initiative, Golden Helix’s software solution can support the client’s throughput as they experience ongoing growth in sample volume. Quality Golden Helix has proved in clinical trials the software’s ability to produce the highest quality reports in order to save time and minimise reworks in the lab. It guarantees the diagnosis is performed right the first time which ensures efficiency. Flexible Deployment The software is suitable for those clients who have a high secure deployment capability, with the ability to run on premises behind the client organisation’s firewall. This means they have complete control over the infrastructure while utilising the platform. All the same, it is possible to deploy the platform in a private cloud, with some clients opting for this solution due to wanting to simplify their IT operations. Business Model Overall, Golden Helix’s business model is simple. It charges one annual fee for its software, training, and support. This enables the client to budget accordingly, so they know what their costs will be year on year. Unlike per-sample models that participate in their revenue stream as sample volume increases, Golden Helix’s fee remains the same no matter how many samples come through the customer’s lab. Enabling Precision Medicine For over 20 years Golden Helix has been a software company that innovates genetic analysis software for next-generation sequencing (NGS) – and, believing that its customers and employees are at the heart of its success, it has built a glowing reputation as the industry leader in its field. Named as Best Global Bioinformatics Firm 2023 – USA in this issue of Corporate Vision magazine, we shine a light on the company and how its products are changing the face of healthcare. Client-Centric Last but certainly not least, the Golden Helix team is always there for its clients and they want them to feel empowered by the software. That’s why they take a very proactive approach to customer success. From the very first moment a client gets in touch, the team is there to help them get up to speed on all the software’s features and functionality. Then, throughout the licensing period, they are available for unlimited support – just like an extension of the client’s own team. And this high standard of service and product doesn’t go unnoticed by the customer, either, with word of mouth references being second to none. The recognition extends even further with Golden Helix being no stranger to awards success. Alongside its triumph within the Corporate Excellence Awards 2023, it has won numerous accolades from the likes of CorporateLiveWire, InsightsSuccess, and Biotech Breakthrough as Top Biotech Solutions in the Industry. Meanwhile, the team’s NGS platform continues to evolve into a leading solution, as last autumn, they announced the VSClinical AMP TSO-500 Workflow. This release was developed in collaboration with clients to provide a solution for clinical analyses, taking into consideration important biomarkers such as tumour mutational burden or microsatellite stability. President & CEO, Andreas Scherer, PhD, comments, “Since its initial launch, this product has been well received in the market. We appreciate the positive feedback we have been receiving.” The company has also been showing its enthusiasm for technology by using the virtual conference format for several years now, as it has been a great way to stay connected with its customers and partners. In 2022, it was able to attend its first in-person conferences around the world in several years, with the team enjoying getting back to meeting new and familiar faces. Andreas confirms, “The personal dialog seems irreplaceable. We value these events to give us the opportunities to further build relationships.” He goes on to tell us more about the Golden Helix team, “We’re a team, and we all depend on each other to make our company and products great. We have a commitment to quality and excellence in everything we do, so we don’t just look for talented individuals – we look for hardworking, motivated team players who are ready to contribute to a product that is making a huge difference in the scientific community.” “We believe in creating an environment where everyone can thrive and grow. We want you to be happy at work because that means you’ll be able to give your best effort every day.” Indeed, Golden Helix is a company that thrives not only because of its team’s extensive expertise, but because they are simply happy within their environment. A big priority for the company is work-life balance, having equipped every employee to work at the office or from home with dual setup of desks, monitors, chairs, and anything else needed in order to do their job well. The benefits here are the flexibility to be at home if needed and quick transition between working locations with one simple plug-in. And not only do team members delight in improving healthcare on a big scale in their day jobs, but they also enjoy a high quality of life due

Issue 1 2023 9 to the spectacular location of the company’s headquarters in the small town of Bozeman, Montana, which boasts Yellowstone National Park right on its doorstep. This is in addition to being in close proximity to world-class ski resorts and blue-ribbon trout streams. After a rewarding day at work, employees can go cycling around town or play in the company’s rec-league soccer team. Now, the team is keenly looking towards the bright future ahead and are excited to share their ambitious vision for 2023! The company will start 2023 strong by releasing the new version of VSClinical supporting TSO-500 for the AMP guidelines. Andreas says, “This required us to improve our ability to process fusions and other structural variants leveraging break-end notations. As a result, we have been working to harmonize our ability to handle all types of structural variants to be processed across the entire VSClinical platform. We are excited to announce that these capabilities will be available for germline interpretations in the first half of this year.“ He goes on to share, “We are also excited about the future of our Golden Helix CancerKB, a premium annotation source that connects biomarkers with clinical outcomes. Golden Helix CancerKB is an important piece of our company’s commitment to providing our customers with the highest value clinical database possible, ensuring that they have all the information they need to make informed decisions about their treatment options. Our software solution enables our customers to create clinical reports leveraging this information very efficiently.” As the NGS market matures, the requirements for scalable deployments is increasing. The team will continue to analyse the entire underlying software stack to meet the changing scalability requirements of their customers. In 1800, Alessandro Volta came up with the idea for the first battery. At that time he couldn’t have imagined the vast number of applications we use batteries for today. Since then the battery has been the subject of a staggering number of reinventions and almost constant research, much of it directed towards making batteries last longer, or be more compact. In recent years, our focus on the need to store large quantities of energy has sharpened. The rise in popularity of electric vehicles, the need to phase out fossil fuels and rising energy costs all cause us to ponder how it will be possible to serve all our energy needs with renewables. Solar and wind-generated electricity are all well and good as long as it’s sunny or windy – but what happens when it’s not? Despite the significant progress made in battery technology over recent decades, modern batteries are still not capable of storing enough energy to fuel the many appliances we need them for. For now, the cost of producing batteries for larger applications often remains prohibitive. Francisco tells us, “By the end of the decade, we need more affordable, more sustainable and more energy-efficient batteries. To make that happen, we need significant cost reduction and much higher efficiency in the use of raw materials. If not, wider electrification in sectors like passenger cars, heavy-duty vehicles, marine or aviation will not happen, in spite of a regulatory framework going in that direction.” Launched with one clear purpose, Basquevolt is working to accelerate Europe’s transition towards a fully electric and sustainable society. Developing competitive solid-state battery technology aimed at the electric vehicle, heavy transport, renewable energy, and electronic device sectors, the company’s focus is on developing affordable, zeroemissions applications for everyone. “We have very ambitious goals,” Francisco says. “In recent decades, researchers all over the world have been working on solid-state battery technologies. We know that new technology will significantly increase the amount of energy that could be stored. But despite progress made with the materials, by companies in China and the United States, nobody has been able to prove the feasibility of mass market industrialisation. We founded Basquevolt to do exactly that. To take the work done by the best battery researchers and successfully industrialise a new generation of batteries with the most innovative materials.” Considering their mass market industrialisation potential, Basquevolt chose to focus on polymer-based solid electrolytes. Considered by many as the perfect material for mass-market applications, this family of electrolytes has many advantages. They’re easy to produce, requiring no high temperatures or high-pressure environments and presenting no major safety risks. The company’s next-generation solid-state lithium batteries will make possible the deployment of electric transportation, stationary energy storage, and advanced portable devices. Basquevolt attributes much of its success so far to more than 10 years of research done by Professor Michel Armand and CIC energiGUNE, one of the top three battery and energy storage research centres in Europe. Founded in 2011, CIC energiGUNE is a strategic initiative of the Basque government. Also based in Alava, CIC energiGUNE is a member of the Basque Research & Technology Alliance and works in collaboration with universities, research centres and companies throughout the region. Understanding the significance of the circular economy on the energy Energy Storage of the Future Basquevolt, SA has its sights set on one goal – to develop the humblest of devices, the battery, into the high energy density storage system of the future. Based in the province of Alava in the Basque region of Spain, Basquevolt is our Most Innovative Lithium Batteries Manufacturer 2023. We take a look at the company in more detail with company CEO, Francisco Carranza. of the future, the collective explores and champions concepts such as ‘design for recycling’. Selecting materials based on not only their in-life capability but also on their ability to recycle them is seen as the key to tackling many current environmental challenges. Francisco explains some of the current challenges the industry is facing: “Large global and traditional companies dominate the automotive sector, most of them created more than a century ago. Now, new players from California and China have entered the market and they are more agile and flexible. They’re racing ahead. At Basquevolt, we want to help speed up progress in this area for the European industry to ensure that the transport sector remains a strong and viable economic pillar of the region.” As a young, purpose-driven company, Basquevolt is challenging traditional thinking to champion the benefits of new technology. By establishing partnerships, the company aims to show that progress do not need to be expensive and difficult. Backed by shareholders and major companies in the energy and automotive sectors and benefitting from European Union funding, Basquevolt is committed to finding solutions to solve the energy challenges we are facing now and those we are sure to face in the future. With liquid electrolyte lithium batteries almost at the limit of their usefulness, Basquevolt’s immediate objective is the development of prototype solid-state cells leading to a pilot production phase in 2025. It plans to start full production of solid-state batteries in 2027. Francisco says, “Renewable energy and wider electrification can solve our energy transition challenges because they are cheaper than fossils, cleaner than fossils, and enhance energy security and geopolitical independence. We need to adapt and act during this window of opportunity. In moments of important technology and social changes, there are opportunities for newcomers such as Basquevolt to enter the market.” Contact: [email protected] Company: BASQUEVOLT, S.A. Nov22437 Best Golf Clothing Brand 2022 Swedish sportswear brand, Abacus Sportswear AB is simply crazy about golf. The company, founded in 1991 by Sven-Olof Karlsson and Ingrid Lindgren-Wachtmeister, started as a small clothing agent. Today, Abacus Sportswear is represented in more than 28 countries worldwide including the USA, Canada, Holland, Denmark, and Germany. We’ve come a long way from the stringent golfing dress codes of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Gone are the woollen knickerbockers for men, which, although looking slightly ridiculous, did allow some movement. But it took the bravery of a few female golfers to shun the floor-length dresses of the day in favour of a shorter skirt. The first time a woman wore trousers in a major championship wasn’t until 1933! Thankfully, the golf clothing of today focuses on functionality and technical performance. And one company that leads the way on both counts is Abacus Sportswear. With over 30 years of experience dressing golfers, there’s no one better qualified to provide garments that deliver outstanding quality and performance. Owner of Abacus Sportswear, Sven-Olof Michael Karlsson tells us, “We love golf. It’s our passion and full focus. We dress the golfer so that he or she can focus on their game. We want them to be able to move freely and enjoy their time on the golf course, whatever the weather.” The company bases its research and development on extensive feedback from all types of golfers: men, women, juniors, tour players, keen amateurs, social golfers, and complete beginners. Abacus Sportswear wants every player to be able to put all their focus where it belongs – on the game itself. Sven-Olof explains, “When you’re in that perfect moment, nothing else matters. You can count on the fact that we design every garment to work and move in total sync with you. Both on and off the golf course.” Being Scandinavia’s number one golf brand, Abacus Sportswear prides itself on offering a wide range of quality waterproofs, windproofs, mid layers, tops, and bottoms at competitive prices. The Abacus Sportswear ‘good-better-best concept’ allows every golfer to source the most suitable clothing for their needs and budget. Whilst the Abacus Sportwear collection for 2023 includes some new innovations and unique styling, the focus remains on lightweight, stretchy, breathable garments. Sven-Olof tells us, “The next few years will be challenging for all consumers but we predict golf will remain popular and that our clients will still demand good quality products at reasonable prices. We’ll continue to provide the outstanding quality you can count on delivered by our knowledgeable staff.” Abacus Sportswear is a proud partner of the Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup, The Open, European Tour, Royal & Ancient, St Andrews Links, German Golf Federation, Irish Golf Federation, and other respected golf events, organisations, and golf-related corporations throughout the world. Its ambition is to continue to lead the development of the golf apparel market for the next 30 years. Company: Abacus Sportswear AB Web Address: https://abacussportswear.com/
