Whether you run a small business or a large one – everyone can benefit from making smart changes to their business’ carbon footprint. We’re going to take a look at how you can make simple switches and changes to reduce your footprints.

What is your carbon footprint?

The World Health Organisation explains that “your carbon footprint is a measure of the impact your activities have on the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced through the burning of fossil fuels and is expressed as a weight of CO2 emissions produced in tonnes.” From the lights you have installed to the types of castors and wheels you have fitted on equipment, many things can impact your carbon footprint – below are some ways you can reduce yours.

Switch to renewable energy

Making the switch to renewable energy can have many benefits on your business – and the environment. As well as reducing emissions it can also save you money over time, so investing in this energy source can be very beneficial. One of the most common renewable energy sources for businesses is solar panels. The Eco Experts explains that “as a guideline, for smaller businesses, a 4kW system with FiT and electricity savings could add up to around £16,000 over 20 years”.

Use technology

Technology is here, so you should utilise it wherever possible. One of the best ways you can reduce your carbon footprint by using technology is by going paperless. We know that this isn’t always possible, but by making changes to reduce paper usage you can save a lot of money, time and energy – as well as reducing the amount of paper you throw away. If you do need to use paper, look at opting for biodegradable paper and recycling where you can. Implementing a recycling scheme at work can have a big positive impact on a business.

Reduce travel emissions

If you are a business which travels around, visiting clients or events, consider how essential these are and choose smarter ways to travel. Think about offsetting your carbon if you are frequent travellers. Carbon offsetting allows businesses and individuals to invest in environmental projects to help balance their carbon footprints. If we look at a flight as an example, The Guardian explains that offsetting “a return flight from London to San Francisco would clock in at around £20 per ticket”. Consider virtual meetings and only travel to meetings where being in-person is essential.

Use smart lighting and taps

Another simple way to reduce your carbon footprint – and your electricity bill – is to use smart lighting. This is where the lights are motion controlled and only turn on when there is movement. This eliminates the chance of a light being left on when it’s not needed. You can also install smart taps where they are also motion controlled – again, eliminating the chance of a tap being left on wasting water.

We hope you can use some of our tips to reduce your carbon footprint.
