6 Firms Offering the Best SMSF Administration Service in Darwin: Who Keeps the Books

5th October 2026

A self-managed super fund needs a set of books every year. Someone has to record the fund’s transactions, prepare the financial statements, get the fund audited by an independent auditor and lodge the SMSF annual return with the ATO. Many trustees hand this work to an administrator or an accountant.

Some firms have a Darwin office. Others serve the Top End online from another city. This article looks at six firms that say, on their own websites, that they prepare the fund’s accounts and returns as part of their administration service. The aim is to show who keeps the books and how each firm works, so a trustee can see which model suits their fund.

A note on SMSF Australia

SMSF Australia offers an outsourced SMSF administration service for trustees and for accounting firms. Its team reconciles bank accounts and investment activity through data feeds linked into the Class Super platform, prepares the financial statements and tax return, and arranges the independent audit. Fixed annual fees start at $1,300 + GST for a basic fund, and that fee includes the independent audit cost. Funds that hold up to two direct properties, crypto or collectables cost $1,600 + GST, and funds with three or more properties or unlisted assets start from $2,000 + GST. The firm has in-house SMSF lawyers. Accounting firms can use a white label service, where the firm can lodge under its own tax agent number, or have SMSF Australia lodge, and keeps live access to the Class environment.

The six firms

1. Just Superfund (Just SMSF)

Just Superfund is an online service that covers all states. Its website says it will “administer to all annual reporting requirements of the fund including the Financial Statements, Member Statements, Investment Reports, Annual Return, and Independent Audit”.

The same page lists a fixed fee of $1,499 (GST inclusive) for annual compliance on an existing SMSF.

This model suits a trustee who is comfortable dealing with a provider online and wants a fixed fee for the annual compliance work.

2. ACTEK Business Solutions

ACTEK has offices in Darwin and Brisbane. Its Darwin SMSF page lists “Annual SMSF Financial Statements”, “SMSF Tax Return Preparation & Lodgement” and “Liaison with Independent SMSF Auditors”.

The firm keeps the books in BGL Simple Fund 360, a cloud-based SMSF administration platform. The page describes “Real-Time Investment & Transaction Tracking via BGL Simple Fund 360” and secure online access to the fund at any time.

This model suits a trustee who wants a local office they can visit, with the fund’s records kept in a live cloud system between annual reviews.

3. MW Group (MW Wealth Management)

MW Group has a page for SMSF clients in Darwin. It states: “We handle all aspects of SMSF administration, including financial statements, tax returns, and annual audits, taking the burden off your shoulders.”

MW Group is a financial advisory firm, so its SMSF administration sits alongside strategy and retirement planning. The page also describes an online wealth portal, MyProsperity, that gives clients real-time visibility of the fund’s performance.

This model suits a trustee who wants the fund’s paperwork and its wider financial planning handled by the same firm.

4. The Total

The Total is based in North Adelaide and offers online consultations across Australia.

Its SMSF page describes the annual work in one line: “Each year we prepare the accounts, coordinate the independent audit, and lodge the SMSF annual return on time.”

The page also lists quarterly catch-ups to review performance, contribution caps and pension strategy.

This model suits a trustee who wants a clear yearly cycle for the books, plus regular check-ins during the year.

5. Taxbyte

Taxbyte is a registered tax accounting firm that serves Darwin clients entirely online. Its superannuation page says: “We take care of quarterly/yearly accounting, preparation of financial statements and tax returns.” It adds: “We facilitate the SMSF audit through ASIC registered SMSF Auditors.”

The choice between quarterly and yearly accounting matters for some funds. Taxbyte’s page explains that a fund registered for GST, or a fund with account-based pensions, needs quarterly accounting, because of quarterly activity statements and quarterly TBAR reporting. Its Darwin page describes meetings by video call and documents shared through cloud systems.

This model suits a trustee who is happy to work remotely and whose fund needs its books kept up to date more than once a year.

6. Heffron

Heffron is a national SMSF administrator. It does not have a Darwin office. Its page for trustees lists “Timely Preparation of Financial Statements and Tax Return”, an “Independent Annual Audit” and online access to fund documents and information.

Each client has a dedicated relationship manager, supported by a team of accountants and technical specialists. Heffron also has a 24/7 online administration portal, where trustees can contact their team and track the fund’s progress.

This model suits a trustee who wants a named contact at a specialist administrator and does not need a local office.

Conclusion

All six firms say they prepare the fund’s financial statements and tax return, and all six include or arrange the independent audit. What changes from one firm to the next is the way they work. ACTEK offers a Darwin office and a cloud platform. Just Superfund, The Total, Taxbyte and Heffron work with clients online from other cities, each with its own mix of fixed fees, quarterly work or a dedicated manager. MW Group combines administration with financial advice. Trustees can compare these models against how their own fund runs and how they like to work with a provider.
