Looking into some Typical Leisure Pursuits for Mariners & People Working at Sea

4th June 2026

The character traits required to become an able seaman, and then enjoy a lengthy maritime career, are many and varied. Among the demands required are mental resilience, physical endurance, adaptability in social situations and coping with long spells monitoring and remaining vigilant while fulfilling the job you have been given. Such attributes can help determine how you like to spend your free time.

The types of leisure activities that can be enjoyed whilst being on board may involve testing your physical stamina, creative hobbies, self-improvement or digital entertainment. Such interests require extensive dedication and concentration, so it is not so surprising that these pursuits may appeal to those spending lengthy amounts of time in an enclosed environment.

Staying physically fit rewards on many levels. You keep the weight off, set and achieve targets and maintain a trim condition both mentally and physically. Ships occasionally have gyms, but all have free spaces where you can work out. Options include running on treadmills or lifting weights, both providing you with excellent carb busting routines.

Running on the open decks can involve more than one person and present you with a beautiful vista, watching sunrise or sunset while keeping fit. It is thought physical exercise can help us eliminate the buildup of problems like stress and anxiety, so it is a winner on many levels.

Where space prevails and personnel are free, team games like football or basketball can be great ways to bond together and test your wits against others. If the sea permits it, a table tennis table or dart board is often a good way to utilise space on board ship.

Creative pursuits and personal development options are available too. On a long voyage there will be a chance to both take up a new skill or improve on another. Opportunities here include writing, photography or painting, learning a new language, practising a musical instrument or taking up an online course in the subject of your choice.

All of the above give you time to take a break from routine. Learning in your own company is a perfect way to make the most of the solitude sometimes handed to you here. Learning the skills to achieve a promotion in your chosen pathway is also an ideal way to spend some time, while on board or at port.

Socializing comes in many forms. Watching movies together, playing board or card games or even karaoke events prove to be quite popular and a lot of fun.

Some crewmen enjoy themselves reading, star gazing or just enjoying the weather or appreciating the peacefulness of the ocean, when possible.

In the modern era digital entertainment is popular, including playing on computer consoles. This can be an activity done alone or involving others. You can bring your own hard drives loaded with recorded tv series, movies or podcasts. Sharing these can be a popular way to find like-minded individuals.

These are just a few of the possibilities availing the seafarer of ways to spend time while on long voyages at sea and in ports. If it is personal development or team building, both are available to the individual presented with periods of free time while on board.
