What AI Overviews Actually Mean for Small Business Search Traffic

24th September 2026

Search results pages now answer a great many questions before anyone clicks anything. For small businesses that have spent years building organic traffic, this feels like the ground shifting, and the advice on offer swings between “nothing has changed” and “organic search is finished”. Neither is much use when you are trying to decide where next quarter’s budget goes.

What follows is a calmer read on what changes, what does not, and what is worth doing about it.

Informational traffic takes the hit first

The queries most exposed are the ones where a short factual answer is the whole job. Definitions, unit conversions, opening-hours style questions, simple how-to steps. If a large share of your organic traffic arrives on posts answering questions of that shape, expect that share to shrink, and expect the visitors you keep to be more engaged rather than fewer of the same.

The queries least exposed are the ones where the searcher needs to choose someone, compare options, see prices, or check whether a provider covers their suburb. Nobody resolves a decision like that from a summary paragraph. Commercial intent still ends in a click.

Being the source is the new ranking

The practical shift is that visibility now has two layers: ranking in the traditional results, and being cited as a source in the generated answer. The second increasingly depends on how cleanly a page states its claims. Content that buries the answer under four paragraphs of preamble is harder to quote than content that answers in the first sentence and then explains.

That is not a trick, it is just good editing, and it happens to be what readers wanted anyway. There is a useful walkthrough of the specific formatting and structural moves that help a page get picked up in AI Overviews, most of which sit close to standard content hygiene.

Your own data matters more than commentary

Aggregate industry claims about click-through decline are close to useless for an individual business, because the effect depends entirely on your query mix. Two businesses in the same sector can see opposite outcomes.

Pull your own numbers instead. Segment your Search Console queries into informational and commercial, then compare impressions and clicks across a long enough window to see a trend rather than noise. If impressions hold while clicks fall on informational queries, you are seeing the effect. If commercial queries are flat, your pipeline is probably fine even though the traffic chart looks worse.

Reweight rather than retreat

The sensible response is a change of mix, not a withdrawal. That usually means fewer thin explainer posts written purely to catch a definition query, and more of the material that only you can produce: pricing frameworks, comparison pages, process explanations, worked examples from real jobs, and location or service pages that answer the practical questions a buyer has before they call.

It also means paying more attention to the parts of your presence that a summary cannot replace – reviews, your Google Business Profile, and the pages that demonstrate you have done this work before. Businesses that get this reweighting right tend to have someone senior looking at the whole channel mix rather than optimising one tactic in isolation, which is where working with an SEO agency like SIXGUN earns its keep.

Measure what you actually sell

If you are still judging the channel on sessions, this transition will read as a disaster whether or not it is one. Move your primary measure to enquiries, qualified leads or revenue, and the picture gets honest. Traffic was always a proxy. It is now a worse proxy than it used to be.

Search is not going away. It is getting stingier with the traffic that never converted anyway, and slightly more competitive for the traffic that does.
